Legal Visitors Get Roof Garden Exposure to 11th Appeals Action:

12/10/2009 - Two 11th Court of Appeals cases were heard Thursday morning at the Roof Garden of the Connellee Hotel. Principals and visitors were also given special tours of the Mediation Center on the Seventh Floor by Retired Appeals Court Chief Justice Austin McCloud.

Chief Justice Jim Wright, Justice Terry McCall and Rick Strange heard two cases Thursday morning. Five cases had been scheduled for the day, according to Clerk Sherry Williamson, but the afternoon sessions were canceled.

Among the special visitors for this public court action were eight students from Ranger College, who were especially cited for their interest in public affairs. The visitors had a good look at Eastland including the now-under-construction Austin McCloud Appeals Court Museum, on the Square.

All county schools were invited to attend this special session, and future sessions are expected to be held at the Connellee. The Court presently has a program of traveling to various sites including colleges and universities as well as far west as Midland in order to give the public an opportunity to truly examine how the appeals system works. In most cases, it is the last resort, because the Texas Supreme Court does not accept all cases.

At 10 a.m. the case was of Jim Hill and Gary Horton vs. principals and the Sportsman's World Ranch Owner's Association, Inc., out of Palo Pinto County. At 11 a.m. the case was Norma Fuqua and Owen Fuqua vs. Oncor Electric Delivery Co., out of Brown County. Eight cases were submitted on briefs, two from Eastland. The number of visiting attorneys were reportedly impressed with what they saw in Eastland. The Court adjourned to Louise's Cafe for old time sake.
