EHS Class of 1960 Leaves Lasting Legacy to City

03/02/2010 - After an idea was suggested during a class reunion in 2005, the surviving members of the Eastland High School graduating class of 1960 put together a plan that not only will live on forever, but will have a lasting impact on the city of Eastland.

Linda Huckabay Boose suggested the class project of naming streets in the city cemetery and putting up street signs, and with the help of former classmate, and then Eastland City Manager Don Wilson, the plan was put into motion.

Class members began sending in checks to fund the project and the real task lay ahead…the naming of each street. After heads were put together, ideas tossed around, it was decided to use the names from rivers in Texas such as Guadalupe, Trinity, Canadian, and yes, Leon. A plan was put on to paper and was presented to the city for approval.

After the project was unanimously approved by the Eastland City Commission, Boose, Wilson and other class members solicited assistance from Dean Vernon, Cemetery Director, Bobby Jacoby, Director of Public Works for the City and other city staff, and the project was kicked off with the ordering of the signs and materials.

Joe Bond Custom Fencing assisted with the digging of the some 39 holes with Pat Boyd of PB Fencing setting the posts in concrete.

Volunteers Tom and Linda Kruger assisted with the erecting of the signs while Debbie Wharton and Mike Perry of the Eastland Community Foundation assisted by serving as the collection point for the project funds. Higginbotham-Bartlett Lumber Company of Eastland provided assistance with materials.

The Class of 1960 would like to thank everyone who helped make this project a great success. Such a success enough funding was received to leave $769.49 to maintain the project for some time. On Monday, February 15, Wilson and Boose presented the remaining funds to the city commission during their monthly meeting.

The Class of 1960 include Marvin Agnew, Colene Newnham Barnett, Linda Huckabay Boose, Richard Connell, Beverly Moser Copeland, Roma Kay Plowman Cozart, Martha Freese Crabtree, Ina Hunt Craighead, Martin Day, Joyce Graham Elmore, Don Hazard, Jan Robertson Hobbs, Jimmy Jimenez, Rev. John Jones, Betty Young Keith, Nathan Kidd, Truman Lane, Victor Latham, Dr. Phillip Lewis, Gary Lusk, Fred Miller, Bob Phillips, Oran Rhodes, Gerry Haines Robertson, Willene Lee Rodgers, Jim Stambaugh, Freddie A Stroud, Linda McCullough Tubbs, Fay Phelps Tucker, Peggy Humphreys Van Geem, Odie White, David Whitten, Don T. Wilson, and John T. Wilson.

The project has received great praise from the city, citizens and genealogists who say finding grave sites will become much easier once the street names catch on.

BP report blames itself, others for oil spill (AP)

A British Petroleum (BP) logo is seen at a petrol station in south London April 27, 2010. BP deflected much of the blame for a rig blast that led to the United States' worst-ever oil spill, releasing an internal report on Wednesday which said that drilling contractor Transocean had missed danger signs. REUTERS/Toby Melville/FilesAP - BP took some of the blame for the Gulf oil disaster in an internal report issued Wednesday, acknowledging among other things that it misinterpreted a key pressure test of the well. But in a possible preview of its legal strategy, it also pointed the finger at its partners on the doomed rig.
